If I hold up a glass with some water in it, you probably know what I’m about to ask, right?

“Is the glass half-full or half-empty?”

Yet I would say it’s neither—physically speaking, the glass is completely full. It’s partially filled with water and partially filled with air. The fact that you can’t readily see the air doesn’t mean it isn’t there. All you have to do is change your perception by asking, “How else might I think about this half full / half empty problem?” to gain a new perspective, find a new angle, and a new answer.

It’s the same with opportunities throughout your life. If you think about opportunities as whatever might be directly available to you that you could exploit or take advantage of, you’re automatically limiting what is possible. If, on the other hand, you can find a way to gain a new perspective on opportunity, well then, as they say, the world is your oyster!

I’m not talking about “manifesting” or the “law of attraction.” Specifically, what I mean is thinking about opportunity in the same way we think about the air filling half of this glass of water. It’s there, it always has been there. Yet, we don’t see it, so we don’t think about it.

So how do I think about opportunity? To me, opportunity comprises everything that is within the realm of possibility at this time in my life. Considering opportunity in this way opens me to much more than simply what’s been presented to me. Then, once I’ve decided to commit to one thing that is realistically possible even if it may be a stretch, all I need from there is one, simple question—“What would it take to make that happen?”—and I’ve created the first step on my path to success.

It will work for you, too. Go ahead. Ask yourself, “What is within the realm of possibility at this time in your life that I would be willing to commit to?” Once you’ve settled on that intention, ask yourself, “What would it take to make that happen, and what’s the first step?”

You, too, will be on your path to success and you’ll never have to wonder about a half-empty glass again.
